ARTIST STATEMENT
I am fascinated by crawling down in the dirt or leaves and looking at the world from a low angle. I discover and fall in love with tangled, intimate spaces. My paintings are explorations of the natural world at a very personal level. Crooks in trees, nests, snarls of roots, fallen logs and knots of branches are what inspire me to create. I love the idea of having to crawl through a painting to get to the background. I also like to play with light and see how it affects a space, how the shadows play on different surfaces. Painting helps me articulate the love I have for this imagery. For me, the most important part of the painting is not the final product, but the journey taken while making it. Every time I paint I learn a little more about how to make more of an impact, how to paint more efficiently, or how to make the space more believable. I get to play with the paint, how it is applied, and what textures are created. Working my way through tough patches helps me problem solve. As I play and learn, I grow as a painter and as a person. Painting is both an exploration of the environments that I choose, and of myself.
